What to Know When You Just Got Braces

In the first 3-5 days after bracket placement, you may feel soreness or mild discomfort as teeth begin to move — this is normal. Over-the-counter pain relief can help if needed, as advised by your dentist.

Stick to soft foods like porridge, soup and smoothies in the first week, and avoid hard, chewy or sticky foods that could dislodge brackets. Dental wax is useful for reducing irritation where new brackets rub against cheeks or lips.

Extra-thorough oral hygiene is essential with braces — use interdental brushes and a water flosser to clean around brackets, preventing cavities and gum inflammation throughout treatment.
